Kenyir - Gua Musang - Cameron Highlands

It all started with me spotting a dotted line (indicating road under construction) from Tasik Kenyir to Gua Musang on the map I just got. I checked the date, map was printed in 2004.
All this while the gang's been talking about the Gua Musang - Cameron Highland route. So I thought it's worth exploring this "new" route. Imagine a complete East - West ride/drive through scenic mountain roads: Tasik Kenyir - Gua Musang - Cameron Highland

At the junction to Pengkalan Gawi. Turn left to get to Tasik Kenyir. The road to Gua Musang is right ahead.

Less than 2 km away, I spotted sign to "Gua Musang".

Further up front, this sign in red that says...
"This road is not yet opened to the public. The Road Works Department will not be responsible for any inconvenience to road users"

OK, this means I'm on my own if I decide to explore this. But then again, since when is the JKR responsible for "any" roads. Not as if they will compensate you if you meet any mishap, or make sure they don't inconvenient you anywhere else.

What follows, is almost 70km of scenic roads where yours will be the only vehicle most of the time. It's like having the road to yourself most of the time.

For those willing to explore this road, you're rewarded with sceneries like these.....

But I know you guys are not into the scenery, so let's look at that road again. Hmmm.....

Whatever kinds of road you fancy, this route has it; "S" bends, long-sweeping bends, long-straights, uphill, downhill....tempting, isn't it?

HOW TO GET THERE?
1. From Kuala Terengganu, head towards Tasik Kenyir (Pengkalan Gawi)
Kuala Terengganu - Kuala Berang (approx 40km)
Kuala Berang - Tasik Kenyir (junction to Pengkalan Gawi) (approx. 40km)
2. At the junction to Pengkalan Gawi, go straight instead of turning left. About 1km ahead, you guys will see the sign to Gua Musang. Follow it.

3. What follows is 70km of roads like in these photos above. After approx 70km, you will come to a cross junction with some constructions going on. Follow the signboard to Gua Musang (turn left).

4. After that cross junction, you will be going thru about 18km of narrow road through oil palm plantation. Careful here, road condition is quite bad and narrow. And since you're in plantation territory, expect tractors, lorries, and other smaller bikes sharing the same narrow road.

5. Continue until you come to a T-junction. That's the main road. Turn left to head towards Gua Musang town. There should be a signboard. From that T-junction to Gua Musang town is about 22km of trunk road. Expect heavy traffic and police roadblock.

6. Once you reach Gua Musang....well, you guys know how to get to Cameron Highland :-)

2 stretches of scenic routes in a day. That will surely make your day.

Here's some extra "footage". Enjoy the ride!
